Nader (Nadir) Shah - Part 1/7 (Harsh Realities of a Crumbling Empire)
Wednesday May 18, 2022
Wednesday May 18, 2022
In this episode we begin uncovering the lifetime of Nader Shah (1688 - 1747), the last of the Great Asiatic Military Conquerors. A brilliant battlefield commander who reversed the fortunes of 18th century Iran, salvaging it from the teeth of internal and external foes. Beginning as the unlikely story of an insignificant and poverty stricken youth, hardened by his chaotic environment. Struggling to survive within the crumbling Safavid Iranian Empire, its foundation now rotting due to a series of lethargic monarchs, disconnected to the harsh realities and changing headwinds of the wider world.

Hi Hamid. Thank you for the words of encouragement and I am happy to see all your engagement with the content! Yes, I wish I had access to the primary source material, but sadly (as you mentioned) it’s not available in English. However, I am very much enjoying reading all your comments and clarifications. Very helpful to understand the full sequence of events!

I think the encounter you mean was with Mohammd ali nicknamed Ushagb and Adineghurt, both of them Sunnj Turkmens the sworn enemies of Kizilbashes, not Uzbeks, at this time Turkmens due to raids from kalmyk mongols from the north had to abandon their pasture in Mangyshlagh peninsule on the banks of Caspian sea, and they imposed ever increasing pressures on Kurdish and Turkic Kizilbash tribes on their southern borders, one of them Afshars

and Nader after defeating Malek in 1724 incorporated Maleks force, and these forces were the core musketeers and artillaries that would make his formidable firearms units

with all regards, I should say that The Uzbek commander of Khiva Khanate named Shir Ghazi Khan, never had any encounter with Nader, and the Tofangchi bashi or the head of musketeers, was just a name, and at that time Nader was just the head of a cavalry unit, and his acquintance wuth fire arms was around 1723 when he was batteling with Malek Mahmud Sistani over Mashhad the capital of Khorasan, at this time Nader couldn’t defeat Malek, because it was Malek who had artillary and musketeers

I have a suggestion for you, making a podcast about Abbas the great, one of the most complex figures in Iranian history, the most important primary source of his reign,Tārīkh-e ʿĀlam-ārā-ye ʿAbbāsī , has been translated into English, and it narrates his reign in detail, in a two volume book

I’m an Iranian, and I have studied the rise of Nader for a year, studying all the primary sources mostly in persina, some in Armenian, English, and Turkish, and most of what you said are correct, since Mr.Lockhart has done a great job, but his book is just a brief account of Naders reign, unfortunatelly Naders reign primary sources has not been translated into English, first I thank you for making podcast about eastern world conquerors, the likes of Amir Teymur and Nader, and...
